Are you a therapist, social worker or student who works with farmers, their families or others in the agricultural community?
If so, you know over half of Canada’s farmers report they suffer from anxiety—that’s almost 10 times higher than Canada’s labour market. Twenty-five percent of farmers reported experiencing suicidal thoughts in the past year.
We’ve developed the Agriculture Informed Therapy (AIT) training program to introduce the unique needs of farmers to therapists and students who may work with them in their practice. This unique, nationally recognized, online course is intended to teach therapists how to effectively build and maintain a therapeutic alliance.
Our goal is to create a network of therapists, each trained to recognize the unique issues facing the agricultural industry, to develop effective mental health strategies that meet the specific needs of farmers and their families. Established cultural competency is imperative in ensuring farmers and their families receive appropriate services when they are sought out.
Our courses are nationally recognized and qualify as fulfilling required professional development hours.
FAQ’s
How is the program content the same and/or different from the Canadian Agricultural Literacy Program?
Our program is very different from the Canadian Agricultural Literacy Program. Our program is 12 hours in length and provides 12 continuing credit hours of training through the CCPA, as well as other social work, psychotherapy, and counselling associations. It is an in depth program that ensures therapists are well informed to work effectively with this population. Upon completion you are featured as part of our network through social media and other forms of advertisement. You are also eligible to become part of our NFMHA team which means you will receive referrals from the region that you represent, and can be part of our ongoing training events, which occur at least bi-annually (some regions like Nova Scotia have quarterly events). Our program discusses effective therapeutic modalities and uses a peer supervision model for ongoing case discussion.
What is the estimated time to complete the program?
It depends on your ambition. It is 12 hours worth of material, and the answers portion is entirely up to you for your own learning experience. We do offer a 1 hr training for the province you practice in – titled Introduction to Agriculture (NB/AB/ON currently available), however the intro to Ag is not mandatory so you are welcome to join at the beginning of Tier 1, Module 1. If you do not have much agriculture experience we strongly suggest the Intro to Ag module. We have had some people cover the material in a weekend or over 2 days ( in person) – but we do not recommend that. Generally we would recommend a Tier per week if you are ambitious.
Is a certificate issued upon completion? (For CCPA recognition.)
Yes! You will be given a welcome package upon sign up, and a congratulations package that outlines the next steps. You are given the certificate with CCPA documentation/designation and pre-approval form. The training is pre-approved, and has been used in many different regions.
How long do registrants have to complete the course? And how long do they have access to the course materials after completion?
There is no deadline. our Director of Engagement (or our director of student engagement if you are a student) will reach out to you and support you through the process. You have unlimited access to the course at this time.
Are prices indicated in CAD?
Yes, it is currently on sale – the price is expected to return to regular pricing ($1100) in October. You also receive a pdf manual that goes with the training and is included in youre registartion. Print manual are available for $60 plus shipping
